How to Avoid Dumpster Overage Fees (The Orange Line Explained)

Kincaide rubber wheel trailer with the Orange Line fill marker

The #1 frustration Wayne County homeowners tell us about their last dumpster rental? Surprise fees at pickup. A per-ton overage nobody warned them about. A fuel surcharge added at the end. An environmental fee they never signed off on. Kincaide built the Orange Line Policy to end all of that.

What Is the Orange Line Policy?

Every Kincaide dumpster. Rubber wheel trailer or roll-off. Has a bright orange line painted horizontally on the inside walls. Fill your dumpster to that line and there are no surprise charges when we come to pick it up. Everything is included in the flat rate you were quoted.

Load above the line and you'll get charged a per-ton overage rate. But we quote that rate to you up front, before pickup, never after. If you'd rather we swap the dumpster for an empty one instead of paying overage, just call.

Why Dumpsters Have a Fill Line

Two reasons. First, safety: an overloaded dumpster can shift or lose debris during transport. That's a road hazard and a legal liability. The Orange Line is set at the point where the load stays secure at highway speeds.

Second, honesty. Most dumpster companies weigh the dumpster on pickup and hit you with a per-ton charge you didn't see coming. Our Orange Line is a visual cue you can check yourself while you're loading. No scales, no surprise math on the invoice.

How to Load a Dumpster Without Going Over

  • Break up bulky items first. Furniture, mattresses, and cardboard boxes create air pockets. Compact them before loading.
  • Load heavy items on the bottom, light on top. Concrete, brick, and shingles first. Wood, drywall, and packaging on top.
  • Fill the corners. A dumpster with corners packed holds significantly more than one loaded loose.
  • Watch for the line as you go. Stop when your loose debris hits it. Even if you think you can compress more.
  • Call for a swap if you underestimated. Cheaper than paying overage on the original.

What Counts as a Dumpster Overage Charge?

Height above the Orange Line is the primary trigger. A few other things can count as overage regardless of fill level:

  • Prohibited materials (hazardous waste, tires, propane tanks, appliances with Freon)
  • Extended rental beyond your agreed pickup date without prior arrangement
  • Damage to the dumpster (rare with normal use)
