Every week we field the same call in Brownstown Township: "I've got a project. Do I need a rubber wheel trailer or a roll-off?" The answer usually comes down to two things: what surface you're setting it on, and how heavy the debris will be.
Which Dumpster Should You Choose?
For residential driveways, especially newer paver, stamped concrete, or aging asphalt, choose the rubber wheel trailer. It sits on pneumatic tires with the load distributed across the trailer axles, so it never contacts the driveway surface directly. For heavy construction debris (concrete, brick, tile), roof tear-offs on larger homes, or any job needing 30 to 40 yards of capacity, choose a roll-off dumpster.
How a Rubber Wheel Trailer Works
A rubber wheel trailer dumpster is essentially a rugged utility trailer with a heavy-gauge steel container welded onto the frame. Instead of being dropped by a hoist arm the way a traditional roll-off is, we tow it into place and unhook it. The trailer sits on inflated pneumatic tires. The same setup that keeps RVs and boat trailers from cracking your driveway.
Advantages over a metal roll-off:
- No direct metal-on-concrete contact. No cracks, no gouges, no rust rings
- Low loading height (about 24 inches). No ramp needed for most jobs
- Stable on grass, gravel, or dirt. A roll-off would sink
- Can be positioned by hand once unhooked. Precise placement in tight driveways
When a Roll-Off Dumpster Is the Better Choice
Roll-offs earn their keep on heavy demolition work. If you're tearing out concrete slab, brick chimney, ceramic tile, or thick construction debris, the roll-off's heavier steel construction handles it better. Roll-offs also come in larger sizes (30 and 40 yards) that rubber wheel trailers don't touch.
Choose a roll-off when:
- You need 30 or 40 yards of capacity
- The debris is unusually heavy (concrete, brick, dirt, roof tile)
- You're on a commercial site with dedicated staging area
- Driveway surface protection isn't a factor

FAQ
Is a rubber wheel trailer cheaper than a roll-off? +
Pricing depends on size, not the product line. A 15 yard rubber wheel trailer and a 15 yard roll-off run close to the same rate. The rubber wheel trailer costs you nothing extra. It just protects the driveway a roll-off can't.
Can a rubber wheel trailer handle a roof tear-off? +
For a single-layer tear-off up to about 15 squares, yes, a 20 yard rubber wheel trailer works. Larger or multi-layer tear-offs need the 20 or 30 yard roll-off instead.
Which one should I pick if I'm not sure? +
